I have completed my MBBS in Sudan, but did internship and obtained my license to practice in KSA. Is this acceptable for the German pathway?

Hi Mohammed, since your internship is officially recognized by the Sudan Medical Council and you have an official letter confirming that, it will generally count as part of your medical education for the German authorities. For the Kenntnisprüfung pathway, what really matters is that you’ve completed your medical degree abroad — a foreign license isn’t strictly required. According to the Bavarian State Government (“Conduct of the Knowledge Examination for Doctors”), applicants with a medical degree from outside the EU/EEA can receive Approbation if their education is equivalent to German standards; if not, they can prove equivalence by passing the Kenntnisprüfung (§ 3 Abs. 1 und 3 BÄO, § 37 ÄApprO). So yes, even without a Sudanese license, you can be eligible for the Kenntnisprüfung route as long as your MBBS and internship are properly documented. Warm regards, Sophie

Hi Mohammed, your question is very relevant – and it’s good that you’re checking this early. In Germany, the rule is quite strict when it comes to where your degree, internship, and license come from. The Approbationsbehörde (the German licensing authority) normally expects that your internship and license were both completed in the same country where you earned your medical degree. In your case, since your MBBS is from Sudan, the authorities will usually expect that your internship and medical registration were also issued by the Sudanese Medical Council. If your internship and license were completed in Saudi Arabia (KSA), that experience can still be valuable as proof of medical practice, but it usually doesn’t replace the internship and licensing requirements tied to your Sudanese degree. Unless the Sudanese Medical Council officially recognizes your Saudi internship and accepts it as part of your MBBS training, the German authorities may not consider it sufficient for direct recognition. In such cases, they could ask you to either repeat your internship under Sudan’s system or prove your medical knowledge in Germany through a Kenntnisprüfung (knowledge exam). Last thing if the KP is going to help me then I'd do it. What I am really concerned about is that I might not be eligible to the whole pathway to begin with, if I didn't have a license for Sudan, but if the KP is all what it takes then that's okay with me.

Hi Sophie, thanks for your response. To begin with, yes my internship here is recognized by the medical council in Sudan and I have an official letter from the council that allows me to do the internship here. After finishing the internship I'm eligible to directly sit for the license exam in Sudan, but the issue is the country isn't stable yet and it is much more easier to get the Saudi license sooner. Another point I do have a preliminary registration from the Sudan medical council that allows me to practice under supervision during internship, so I want to know if this could be of any value.Last thing,
