Gastarzt / observership, do you actually get paid for that?

A clinic offered me a Gastarzt position. Is that a paid job or basically an unpaid observership? I am confused about what Gastarzt even means here.

“Gastarzt” is not a precisely defined legal term, which is exactly why it is confusing — it can mean very different things:
• Pure observership (Hospitation-like): you only observe, no independent clinical work, usually unpaid.
• Paid clinical role: if you hold a Berufserlaubnis and actually treat patients under supervision, it can be a paid position close to an Assistenzarzt role.
What decides it is your legal status (do you have a BE?) and what the contract says you may do. Before accepting, ask the clinic in writing: Is this paid? Will I work clinically or only observe? Do I need a Berufserlaubnis? Who supervises me, and am I insured? Never start a “Gastarzt” arrangement without those answers on paper.

gastarzt can mean different things. mine was basically observership, no real salary, just to learn. some are paid if you actually work clinically with a BE. ask exactly

i had a gastarzt contract that WAS paid because i had berufserlaubnis and did clinical work under supervision. so it depends on your status 100%

just get it in writing. “gastarzt” with no contract details = red flag. clarify pay, insurance, supervision before you start

i turned down a gastarzt offer because it was unpaid but basically full time work, felt like free labor. only worth it if you get paid or learn alot from it
