A Berufserlaubnis is issued by one Bundesland and is generally valid only there, and usually only for the employer and role named in it. Moving means applying again:
• Apply in the new Bundesland before you resign. The second application is normally faster because your translations, certified copies, and equivalence assessment already exist, but it is not instant.
• Expect a gap in which you may not work as a doctor. Ask both the new authority and the new employer for realistic timing and negotiate the start date around it rather than around your notice period.
• The requirements themselves differ between states, so check the new authority’s list rather than assuming your existing file is complete. A Defizitbescheid from one state is not automatically adopted by another.
• An Approbation is different. Once granted, it is valid throughout Germany and does not have to be reapplied for.
