Recognition for veterinarians: Approbation, Eignungsprüfung and Kenntnisprüfung
Veterinary practice is regulated in Germany. Full authorisation is the Approbation; a temporary Berufserlaubnis may allow limited practice while recognition is pending.
EU, EEA or Swiss qualifications covered by automatic recognition need no individual curriculum comparison. Other qualifications are assessed for equivalence, taking relevant experience into account.
If substantial differences remain, the authority sets the applicable compensation measure. For third-country training this may be a Kenntnisprüfung; for an EU qualification outside automatic recognition, it may be an Eignungsprüfung. Read the authority’s decision before planning an exam.
Documents and German level for the veterinary Approbation
Check the current list from your chosen state authority. Common requirements include:
- Identity document, veterinary qualification and a detailed curriculum. Include animal species, public health, food hygiene and disease-control training, not only small-animal clinical practice.
- Evidence of professional practice and registration or licence where relevant.
- Evidence of personal reliability and medical fitness, as requested by the authority.
- German at B2 level; confirm accepted proof with the authority.
- Certified copies and translations in the form the authority requests. Specialist veterinary titles are handled separately by the relevant chamber.
How long veterinary recognition takes and what drives the cost
The procedure starts when the authority has a complete file. The federal portal generally gives a four-month decision period, with possible extensions in specific cases. An EU automatic recognition case can be shorter.
Budget for the authority fee, translations and any compensation measure named in your decision. Timing also depends on collecting records and available exam dates.
- Decision period
- Usually up to 4 months; extensions possible
- German
- B2; confirm accepted evidence locally
- Compensation
- Only if the authority finds substantial differences
Which state office decides the veterinary Approbation
Apply to the competent veterinary authority in the state where you intend to work.
| Federal state | Approbation authority |
|---|---|
| North Rhine-Westphalia | Landesamt für Verbraucherschutz und Ernährung NRW (LAVE)Recklinghausen |
| Bavaria | Regierung von OberbayernMünchen |
| Baden-Württemberg | Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart - Referat 35 - Veterinärwesen, LebensmittelüberwachungStuttgart |
A specialist veterinary title is a separate matter for the relevant Tierärztekammer.
Working as a vet while you wait
Ask the authority whether a temporary Berufserlaubnis is available for your case. Its conditions can limit where and how you practise.
Without Approbation or a valid temporary permit, do not carry out regulated veterinary practice. Immigration and work-permit conditions are separate.
