How we help you
The three services that help most in your profession. You find all others in the overview.
How the route works for a ZFA
Check whether you need the equivalence decision. A practice can hire you without it, but the usual skilled-worker visa under § 18a AufenthG requires it, and it shows a practice what your training is worth.
Apply to the Zahnärztekammer Westfalen-Lippe in Münster. It compares your training with the German three-year ZFA training, and work experience can make up for differences.
Read the decision. It confirms full equivalence or lists the differences. You can close those with a course or practice period and then file a follow-up application.
Get your X-ray knowledge certified by the dental chamber of your state before you operate an X-ray unit. This is a separate step from the equivalence check.
Visa routes from outside the EU
Skilled-worker visa (§ 18a AufenthG): open once the equivalence of your qualification has been established, which for a ZFA means the decision from Münster.
Skilled worker with a university degree (§ 18b AufenthG): if your degree is recognised in Germany or comparable to a German one, you may take up qualified work, including as a ZFA, without the ZFA equivalence decision.
Recognition partnership (§ 16d (3) AufenthG): you start the recognition procedure after you arrive and work in a qualified job meanwhile. It needs a qualification recognised where you trained after at least two years of training, a concrete job offer, a written agreement with the practice and German at A2, the level the official finder names.
Experience route (§ 6 BeschV): no German recognition, but at least two years of relevant work in the last five, a qualification recognised where you trained after at least two years of training, confirmed by a competent German body, and a salary of at least 45% of the pension contribution ceiling, unless the practice applies a collective agreement.
Western Balkans rule (§ 26 (2) BeschV): citizens of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia may take up any job with the labour office's approval. The first application goes to a German mission in one of those countries, and approvals are capped at 50,000 a year.
Documents for the equivalence check
Use the current list from the chamber. Common items are:
- Certified copy of your passport.
- Your training certificate and the curriculum with subjects and hours, as certified copies with a German translation.
- Your CV and proof of every job you held as a dental assistant.
- No German certificate is needed for the procedure itself, so you can apply before you have one.
How long it takes and what it costs
By law the chamber confirms receipt within one month and decides within three months of the day your file is complete. It may extend the decision once in a difficult case, and the clock stops while documents are outstanding, so the whole procedure can take longer.
A follow-up application after a decision that lists differences costs €190. Budget separately for translations and certified copies. If you already live in Germany and your income is low, the federal Anerkennungszuschuss may refund part of the costs; apply for it before you file for recognition.

Where you apply
One office handles ZFA applications from every German state: the Zahnärztekammer Westfalen-Lippe, Auf der Horst 29, 48147 Münster.
Zahnärztekammer Westfalen-Lippe: foreign qualificationsYour X-ray knowledge is the exception: the dental chamber of the state you work in certifies it, so ask that chamber how it handles knowledge gained abroad.
Working in a practice
Because the occupation is not regulated, a practice can hire you on its own judgement, even without the equivalence decision. A practice that cannot judge your foreign training may start you on supporting work until it sees the decision.
The limits are in specific tasks, above all X-rays and the reprocessing of medical instruments, and a dentist may delegate permitted tasks only to staff with the relevant training and competence.
A dental technician makes crowns and dentures in a laboratory and is a different German profession. Check the name of your own qualification before you apply.
