How we help you
The three services that help most in your profession. You find all others in the overview.
How the route works for a dental technician
Check whether you need the equivalence decision. An employer can hire you without it, but the usual skilled-worker visa under § 18a AufenthG requires it, and it helps with your pay grading.
Find your Handwerkskammer in the Anerkennungs-Finder, ask it for advice and apply to that chamber only. It compares your training with the German one, and documented laboratory experience can close a gap on paper.
Read the decision. It confirms full equivalence or partial equivalence with a list of differences. After partial equivalence you complete an adaptation qualification and file a follow-up application.
Planning your own laboratory? That is a separate step: you need an entry in the Handwerksrolle, which normally means the German Meisterprüfung or one of its alternatives.
Visa routes from outside the EU
Skilled-worker visa (§ 18a AufenthG): the standard permit, for any qualified employment. It requires the equivalence decision of the Handwerkskammer.
Accelerated procedure (§ 81a AufenthG): your employer can apply for it for permits under §§ 16d and 18a. The foreigners authority then starts the equivalence procedure and pre-approves the visa.
Recognition partnership (§ 16d (3) AufenthG): you enter with a concrete job offer and start recognition in Germany. It needs a state-recognised qualification of at least two years, an agreement with the employer, the Federal Employment Agency's consent and German at A2.
Experience route (§ 6 BeschV): no German recognition, but at least two years of professional experience within the last five, a state-recognised qualification of at least two years, confirmed by a German expert body, and a salary of at least 45% of the pension contribution ceiling, unless the employer applies a collective agreement.
Chancenkarte (§ 20a AufenthG): a permit to look for work or for measures to recognise your qualification, either with a qualification fully recognised in Germany or through the points route. You may work up to 20 hours a week, and your living costs must be secured.
Western Balkans rule (§ 26 (2) BeschV): citizens of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia can get approval for any employment. The first application goes to a German mission in one of those countries, and approvals are capped at 50,000 a year.
German training (§ 16a AufenthG): without a completed qualification there is nothing to compare, and your route is the German training as a Zahntechniker, which takes three and a half years.
Documents for the equivalence check
Each chamber publishes its own list, so use the one from yours. Common items are:
- The application form and proof of identity.
- Your CV.
- Your training documents with German translations.
- Proof of relevant work experience, which can make up for differences in your training.
- If you cannot produce your certificates through no fault of your own, ask about a qualification analysis, such as a work sample or technical interview.
How long it takes and what it costs
By law the chamber confirms receipt within one month and decides within three months once all documents are complete. It can extend the decision once, and the clock starts only when the file is complete.
The fee depends on the effort and is due whatever the result. Translations, document procurement and any qualification analysis come on top. If you live in Germany and your income is low, the federal Anerkennungszuschuss may refund part of the costs; apply for it before you file for recognition.
- Fee
- €100 to €600
- Receipt confirmed
- Within 1 month
- Decision
- 3 months from a complete file
Which chamber decides
The Handwerkskammer for your place of work or residence decides. Chambers differ even inside one state: in Bavaria, Munich and Nuremberg belong to different chambers, so search by your location.
Find your chamber in the Anerkennungs-FinderIf you still live abroad and have no home or workplace in Germany yet, the Federal Employment Agency's Zentrale Servicestelle Berufsanerkennung (ZSBA) guides you free of charge. It makes no decision itself.
Working in a laboratory
Employment in the trade needs no recognition, so a laboratory can hire you on its own judgement. Full equivalence can give you a claim to the matching collective-agreement grading, according to the Handwerkskammer Hannover, and it helps in the job search.
A decision of equivalence does not give you a German Gesellenbrief. That is awarded only after a German Gesellen or Meister examination.
A dental assistant (ZFA) works with patients in a practice and is a different German profession. Check the name of your own qualification before you apply.
