Anerkennung for medical technologists, ATA and OTA: the Erlaubnis
Medical technologists in radiology (MT-R), laboratory analytics (MT-L) and functional diagnostics (MT-F) hold distinct protected titles under the medical technologist law. Anaesthesia technical assistants (ATA) and operating theatre technical assistants (OTA) are protected under a separate law. The state office compares a foreign qualification with the chosen German reference occupation.
The office considers training content, practice and relevant work experience. If it finds substantial differences, its notice explains the compensation route under the applicable law. Do not apply under a generic “MTA” category when the form offers the specific current profession.
Documents and German level
For the exact MT, ATA or OTA title, ask the office for its list. Expect to prepare:
- Diploma and curriculum with theory hours and supervised practical hours.
- Field-specific records: lab methods and quality control (MT-L), imaging and radiation safety (MT-R), or functional diagnostic procedures (MT-F).
- For ATA or OTA: records of anaesthesia or operating-theatre placements, including the tasks you performed.
- Dated work references describing tasks and equipment used.
- Identity documents and the required translations or certified copies.
- Health, reliability and German-language evidence for the final title authorisation.
- For MT-R roles, separate evidence of radiation-protection competence where the activity requires it.
How long it takes and what drives the cost
The authority first checks whether the application is complete, then compares it with the chosen reference profession. Official finder pages describe an acknowledgement within one month; the applicable decision period and any extension should be confirmed with the state office.
The fee, translations and any compensation measure affect total cost and time. An aptitude or knowledge test is not a substitute for the remaining authorisation requirements, such as health, reliability and German.

Working while you wait: assistant roles, Anerkennungspartnerschaft
Do not use a protected MT, ATA or OTA title before authorisation. A separate support role may be possible if its duties, supervision and immigration conditions permit it.
Clinical and radiation-related tasks can carry additional safety restrictions. Ask the employer which activities you may perform while the recognition application is pending.
